God gave Israel a test in Deuteronomy 13 that is so specific and so direct that most contemporary believers have never had to sit with its full weight.
The scenario described is not a hypothetical. It is a situation God treats as certain to arise: a prophet or a dreamer of dreams who gives a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes to pass. The miracle happens. It is real. It is documented. The people witness it. And then the prophet uses that validated miracle to say: let us go after other gods, which you have not known, and let us serve them. The diagnostic the text provides is immediate and absolute: “you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for the LORD your God is testing you to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul” (Deuteronomy 13:3, NKJV).
The miracle came to pass. The verdict is still: do not listen. Because the test was never the miracle. The test is what the miracle is serving. Where is the miracle pointing? Toward the commandments of God or away from them?
This is the diagnostic that never fails, and it is the one the text applies to the specific situation this week’s reading describes: the person through whom apparent cures are performed, who uses those manifestations to excuse neglect of the law of God. The cure happens. The impression of divine endorsement is produced. And the person whose power produced the cure treats their own disobedience to God’s law as a matter of no consequence, or actively teaches that the law is irrelevant, or positions the miracle itself as evidence that the old standard no longer applies to them.
The test reveals he is a transgressor of the moral law, and employs every device that he can master to blind men to its true character. The blindness to the law’s character is not an accidental byproduct of the false miracle-worker’s theology. It is the objective. The moral law, “holy and just and good” as Paul describes it in Romans 7:12 (NKJV), is precisely what the deceiver needs to displace, because the law is what exposes him. He is a transgressor of it. His entire operation depends on the people he is targeting not knowing or not applying the standard he cannot meet.
“To the law and to the testimony: if they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (Isaiah 8:20, NKJV). The diagnostic is always the same. Not the power of the miracle. Not the sincerity of the performer. Not the documented reality of the cure. Does the message, does the movement, does the teacher’s own life and teaching, align with the law of God? If not, the source of the power is identified regardless of how impressive the power is.
This is not a narrow, legalistic argument about rule-keeping. It is the application of the most fundamental test Scripture provides for identifying the source of spiritual power. The God of Scripture is the God who revealed His character in His law. A movement that undermines that law, however genuinely spectacular its miracles, is not moving in the direction that God moves. He does not work against His own character. The devil does, because undermining God’s character is the original project, the same argument made in the garden with the original question: did God really say?
The test applies to every apparent miracle. Does the one through whom it comes speak according to the word?
This is not an abstract theological rule applied from a safe academic distance. It is the live, practical, moment-of-encounter question that determines what you do with what you have just witnessed. A dramatic healing has occurred in your presence. The crowd is responding with wonder and attribution. The emotional pressure toward agreement is real. And in that moment, the test is available: what does this person teach about the commandments of God? What is their life’s orientation toward the law that God says is the expression of His character? Is the direction of this movement toward the One whose law is holy and just and good, or does the miracle come packaged with a teaching that the law has been superseded, that the commandments are the old framework that the new revelation has moved beyond?
The answer to that question does not require advanced theological training. It requires the willingness to ask it when the impressiveness of the miracle is creating every possible incentive not to. That willingness is itself the evidence that the preparation has occurred. And its absence in the moment of the impressive wonder is the specific thing the warning was trying to prevent.
