The Healer Who Cannot Keep the Law
The miracle and the message always travel together
Here is the synthesis that connects Monday and Tuesday’s readings, and it is more disturbing than either thread is separately.
Monday established that the healing can be real without being from God. The adversary can introduce physical affliction and withdraw it. The cure is genuine. The attribution is the deception. And the cure is specifically staged in a context designed to produce the attribution — public, dramatic, apparently immediate, witnessed by people who have no alternative framework for explaining what they have just seen.
Tuesday established that the diagnostic for identifying the source is not the miracle but the relationship between the miracle-worker and the law of God. The transgressor of the law employs every available means to blind people to the law’s character, because the law is the instrument that identifies him. His entire strategy depends on the displacement of the standard that exposes him. And so the miracles he performs are not random demonstrations of power. They are deployed toward a specific end: to produce in the witnessing community the conclusion that the one performing the miracles is divinely authorized, and that the authorizer of the miracles endorses the teacher’s stance toward the law.
Put the two threads together, and the strategy becomes completely visible. The healer who cannot keep the law performs a healing that is designed to make you think God endorses the healer. If you accept the endorsement, you accept the package — the healing and the teaching. And the teaching is the law’s displacement. Which is the whole point.
“Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’” (Matthew 7:22, NKJV). The credential list is entirely composed of miracle-type evidence. Prophesying. Casting out demons. Wonders. All in the name of Christ. And Jesus’s response is not a review of whether the miracles occurred. He does not dispute the record. He says: “I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” (Matthew 7:23, NKJV). Lawlessness is the verdict. The miracles were real and the attribution was wrong, and the wrong attribution led the performers of the miracles and the people who accepted them as divinely endorsed into the same destination.
The connection between the miracle and the law is not incidental. It is the load-bearing structure of the diagnostic. God does not work against His own law. His law is the expression of His character. A power that produces genuine miracles while systematically undermining the law of God is not God’s power working inconsistently. It is a different power that has understood that miracle-performing is the most effective way to produce the specific conclusion it needs you to reach.
“Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life” (Revelation 22:14, NKJV). The connection between commandment-keeping and genuine blessing is not a minor theme in Scripture. It is woven through both Testaments as one of the most consistent expressions of what genuine relationship with God produces in the person who has it. The fruit of the genuine relationship includes genuine obedience to the law. Not as the ground of salvation but as the natural expression of a genuine connection to the One whose character the law reveals.
The healer who cannot keep the law, who uses the healing to excuse the law’s irrelevance, has answered the question Monday raised about the source of the power. The answer is in the relationship to the law. The diagnostic never fails.
And the reason it never fails is not because the diagnostic is clever. It is because the nature of the two powers involved is fundamentally different, and that difference expresses itself consistently in how each power relates to the law of God. God’s power never works against God’s character. The law is the expression of God’s character in a form accessible to human understanding. Therefore, God’s power never works against the law. Anything that works impressive signs and miracles while systematically undermining the law is, by that specific evidence, not operating from the source it claims.
The adversary cannot keep the law because he is the original transgressor of it. His rebellion was specifically a rebellion against the governance of God, which the law represents. His entire project since the rebellion has been the project of getting humanity to join him in the same posture — not through obvious wickedness but through the gradual, impressive, miracle-accompanied reframing of the law as something beneath the level of the spiritually advanced. The healer who teaches that the law has been superseded is not arriving at that conclusion independently. They are being used to advance the oldest argument in the universe: the argument that began in the garden with the most consequential question ever asked.
