You remember exactly what it felt like.
The service, the room, the moment your chest went tight and something in you broke open and you were sure — more sure than you had ever been of anything — that God had just touched you. You built things on that certainty. You told people about it. And then, weeks later, or months, the feeling was simply gone, the way weather passes, and nothing had replaced it but a silence that felt like abandonment. You have been quietly asking ever since: was it real? And if it was real, why did it leave?
There is a reason it left. It was never designed to stay, because it was never designed to be the foundation.
“But the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables” (2 Timothy 4:3-4, NKJV). Notice the mechanism described here. It doesn’t begin with someone rejecting God outright. It begins with someone preferring what feels good to what is true — itching ears instead of sound doctrine — and the drift happens so gradually that by the time the fables have replaced the truth, the person still believes they are being led by the Spirit. A feeling can be manufactured, mistaken, or simply misread. Truth cannot. That is the whole danger of building your assurance on an emotion: emotions are honest reporters of what is happening in your body, but they are unreliable reporters of what is happening in the throne room. They were never given that job.
So what was given that job? Not a feeling. A Person who does not fluctuate.
“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me’” (John 14:6, NKJV). He did not say, I am a feeling you will have about Me. He said He is the truth — a fixed reality, not a passing state. A feeling rises and falls with your sleep, your circumstances, your body chemistry. Truth does not rise and fall with anything. It simply is. And when your certainty is anchored to Christ as the truth rather than to the memory of what you once felt about Him, the fading of the feeling stops being evidence He left and becomes what it actually is: the ordinary rhythm of being human, which He knew about before you ever felt anything at all.
This does not mean the moment wasn’t real. It means the moment was never meant to be the whole house — it was one room in it, and you are allowed to walk into other rooms.
Think about what you actually build a house on. Not the memory of a particular afternoon of good weather. Footing. Something poured once and trusted every day afterward without needing to be repoured. That is what truth is for a life of faith — not a recurring sensation you chase back into existence every time it fades, but a foundation you can stand on in February exactly as well as you stood on it in June. The itching-ear drift Paul described does not usually announce itself as rebellion. It shows up as a quiet, reasonable-sounding preference for whatever teacher makes you feel the most, over whatever text is actually true. That preference feels harmless right up until the day you realize you can no longer tell the difference between a feeling and a fact.
Search the Scriptures again. Not to recover the feeling — you cannot manufacture what only He can give — but because that is where He actually put Himself to be found, steadily, on ordinary days, without the theatrics. The itching-ear drift Paul warned about starts exactly where you stop searching and start substituting. Stop searching, and something will rush in to fill the space. It always does.
You are not required to distrust what happened to you that night. You are only required to stop asking it to do a job it was never built for.
If the feeling isn’t the foundation, and it was never supposed to be, then what does it look like to actually stand on something steadier — something that doesn’t need a repeat performance to keep holding you up?

Reflection Question: Think of one belief about God you currently hold mostly because of how a past experience made you feel. Write down what Scripture, searched directly rather than remembered emotionally, actually says about that same truth.
