Why Cast Aside Unbelief?
What Happens When You Actually Heed Christ's Words
What's stopping you from experiencing the rest Christ offers? Is it that He hasn't made it available? Is it that the invitation isn't sincere? Is it that you're too far gone to qualify?
Or is it simply unbelief—you’re not taking Him at His word, not trusting His promise, not acting on His invitation?
Scripture asks directly: Why not cast aside all unbelief and heed the words of Jesus? It’s not a rhetorical question. There’s no good answer. You want rest—Christ offers it. You long for peace—He provides it. So why continue in unbelief? Why keep struggling in your own strength when He’s inviting you to find rest in His?
Think about what unbelief actually is. It’s not honest doubt that wrestles with hard questions. It’s not struggling to understand difficult truths. Unbelief is hearing Christ’s clear invitation and refusing to act on it. It’s knowing what He promises but not trusting enough to receive it. It’s having the offer extended but choosing not to accept it. That’s unbelief—and it’s what keeps most believers from experiencing what Christ offers.
Christ says come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. That’s not a vague, uncertain possibility. That’s a definite promise. He will give you rest. Not might if you’re lucky. Not could if circumstances align. Will. Guaranteed. Certain. Promised. So why are you still laboring? Why are you still heavy laden? Because you’re not coming. And you’re not coming because of unbelief.
Listen to the logic Scripture presents. You want rest—that’s the desire. You long for peace—that’s the need. Christ offers both—that’s the provision. So say from the heart, “Lord Jesus, I come, because You have given me this invitation.” Not complicated theology. Not sophisticated spiritual techniques. Just come because He invited you. Believe the invitation is real, trust the promise is true, and act on it by coming.
But unbelief holds you back. Maybe you think you need to clean yourself up first before you’re worthy to come. Maybe you believe you should wait for some special feeling to confirm it’s the right time. Maybe you doubt that His invitation really includes someone like you with your particular struggles and failures. All of that is unbelief—refusing to take Christ at His word and act on what He clearly promised.
Think about what it means to believe with steadfast faith. Steadfast means unwavering, firm, constant. Not faith that fluctuates based on your feelings or circumstances. Not faith that wavers when you don’t feel anything special. Steadfast faith that says, “Christ promised He would save those who come to Him, so I’m coming, and I’m trusting His promise regardless of how I feel.” That’s the faith that receives what Christ offers.
And when you believe with that kind of steadfast faith, He will save you. Not might save you if you maintain adequate spiritual performance. Not could save you if you prove yourself worthy. Will save you. The promise is certain because it depends on His faithfulness, not your perfection. Your faith doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to be real, steadfast, trusting in His promise rather than your performance.
But notice the questions Scripture asks. Have you been looking to Jesus, who is the author and finisher of your faith? Where are you looking? At yourself and your failures? At your circumstances and struggles? At other people and their opinions? Or at Jesus, the One who begins faith in you and brings it to completion? If you’re not looking at Him, you’re not positioned to receive what only He provides.
Have you been beholding Him who is full of truth and grace? Beholding means more than quick glances. It’s sustained attention, focused contemplation, deliberate meditation. Are you actually spending time contemplating Christ’s character, studying His life, meditating on His words? Or are you just going through religious motions without actually focusing on Him? Because transformation comes through beholding, not through blind activity.
Have you accepted the peace which Christ alone can give? This is crucial—Christ alone. Not Christ plus your efforts. Not Christ supplemented by your righteousness. Christ alone. The peace He gives doesn’t come from any other source. You can’t generate it through positive thinking. You can’t achieve it through meditation techniques. It comes only from Christ, received only by faith, accessed only by accepting what He offers.
If you haven’t, then yield to Him. Stop resisting. Stop holding back. Stop trying to maintain control. Yield means surrender, submission, giving up your way to accept His. Through His grace—not through your effort—seek for a character that will be noble and elevated. Notice that—you’re seeking something, but you’re doing it through His grace. It’s active pursuit empowered by divine enabling. Both together.
Seek for a constant, resolute, cheerful spirit. Not occasional bursts of spiritual enthusiasm. Constant—steady, continuous, reliable. Resolute—determined, firm, unwavering. Cheerful—joyful, grateful, positive. That’s the kind of character Christ produces in those who yield to Him. Not grim determination. Not joyless duty. Constant, resolute cheerfulness that flows from resting in His grace.
But here’s how it happens: Feed on Christ, who is the bread of life. Feed means regular nourishment, continual intake, sustained consumption. You don’t feed on Christ once and consider yourself sustained for life. You feed daily, regularly, continually. How? By reading His Word, contemplating His character, meditating on His promises, focusing your attention on Him. That’s feeding on Christ—taking Him in so He nourishes your soul.
And when you do, you will manifest His loveliness of character and spirit. Not manufacture it through effort. Manifest it. Display it. Demonstrate it. Why? Because you’re feeding on Him, and what you feed on shapes what you become. Feed on Christ consistently, and His character naturally shows up in you. His loveliness becomes visible through you. Not because you’re trying to copy it, but because feeding on Him produces it in you.
So stop the unbelief. Stop doubting the invitation. Stop questioning whether it really includes you. Cast it aside. Heed Christ’s words. Come to Him. Believe His promise. Feed on Him. And watch Him produce in you what you could never manufacture yourself.
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
